LUCA- The gentleman Rooster. Luca came in the first batch of chickens I had ever had the privilege of knowing. As a matter of fact I got 7 chooks, and 4 of them were Roosters ( I use a pendulum now to confirm the sex of chickens). Early on everyone had told me there was no need for a Rooster, and I happened to find Luca (Originally Lucille Ball) hanging upside down with his leg twisted & broken in among some wire that was holding the perch in place. He must’ve been there a while as the ants had started to congregate where the blood was. He was in a lot of pain and shock. So I administered some Bach Rescue Remedy I didn’t think he was going to make it through the night. I brought him inside popped him in a laundry basket, gave him Reiki all-night, at intervals. When he was still alive the next morning I set the spare room up for him.so I could sit him on my lap and apply the Reiki,
I also used Arnica ream (for bruising) and crystals in the basket with him. It took him nearly a week to start moving, and his leg was significantly damaged, and all the farmers I spoke to, told me to put IT out of its misery. So with a heavy heart I made the call to the Vet. I cried the whole way while I fed him sunflower seeds (his favourites). When I got to the vets, and took Luca in he had his head tucked in under my chin and over my shoulder, purring, as had become his way of giving affection. The vet asked me to put him on the table, which I did. And Luca took a couple of tentative steps, then fell over. The vet looked at me and asked how long had he been like this. I replied about 10 days. He then said, “I reckon you should give her a chance, I’ve never seen a chicken show so much affection.” This was music to my ears. So I drove home with him, got him a cot to help rehabilitate him, took him to the main coop daily so he would be accepted when the time came. He was the most gentle of roosters to his girls he always asked politely before he had his way with them, and respected their wishes if they declined his advances.
He always walked with a 'goose-step' from his injuries.
More importantly, from the bond we had developed we had a constant link of telecommunication, he would let me know if the girls needed to get back into the coop to lay an egg. He would let me know when they had laid an egg. If there was a python nearby. And if I was ever away I would just tune in and see what was happening using is eyes. As it happened two foxes came and grabbed him and all his favourite girls one fateful evening. I still miss the sound of his crows, and I know he put up a gallant fight to protect his girls. Vale my lovely Luca. He sends me unique feathers in random places, like in the middle of a coffee table.
